WHS wins Local History Grant

Pasco Campus Librarian Janie Carrington was successful in obtaining a grant of $4000 from the Public Record Office Victoria. The money is to be used for the purchase of materials to house the school archives, safe guarding them from damage for future generations.

The Local History Grants Program provides small grants to community organisations to support the cost of projects that preserve, record or publish Victorian local history. The program is administered by Public Record Office Victoria. They will distribute $350,000 for projects in the 2014-15 financial year.

The WHS-100 years and counting project, also involves cataloging and scanning items and uploading them to the Victorian Collections website. Victorian Collections is administered by Museum Victoria. It is a great site with access to many artifacts, documents and photographs reflecting our history, from hundreds of small collections across the state.

The process of adding WHS items to this site has already started, with nearly 100 photos, High Tides, Speech day programs, school reports, certificates and other memorabilia able to be viewed now. Visit our collection and leave a comment or browse other collections here:

Williamstown High School gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government and Public Record Office Victoria for making this project possible.

If you have any school memorabilia that you would like to donate to the collection contact Janie Carrington on 93939027 or email carrington.janie.w@edumail.vic.gov.au.

Well Being Week May 2014

As part of Well Being Week the library is showcasing essential oils as an aid to:

  • improve memory concentration when studying.
  • help to alleviate stress.
  • assist with relaxation and getting a good nights sleep.

Come into the Library during Well Being Week and pick up a bookmark with recipes for oil blends. We will have sprays and oil burners operating over the week, so have a sniff when you come in. It might improve your concentration.

Visit our PascoLibrary pinterest buttonPinterest page to find some sweet smelling links to help you study, relax or get a good nights sleep.

BerriesThere are many ways to use essential oils:

In the bath.

On a handkerchief.

On your pillow.

In an oil burner or on diffusing skewers.

Mixed with a carrier oil (e.g. sweet almond oil) and used in massage.

In a bowl of hot water – cover your head with a towel and hold over the bowl.

As an ingredient in a scented candle.

As a spray. (See recipe below for a relaxation blend.)

Air Sweetner Spray

1 tspn bergamont oil, 1 tspn lavender oil, 1 tspn lemon oil, 1 tspn rose oil, 50 drops cinnamon oil, 20 drops clove oil

Mix all the oils in a 25ml bottle. Shake well. Leave for 4 days. Add 1 tspn of the oil blend to a spray bottle about 250 ml in size. Top up with water. Shake well before use. Do not spray on polished furniture.

Aromatherapy for Pet Care

Peppermint oil is also useful for pet care. It repels fleas, so a spray containing peppermint oil can be used on pet bedding, in kennels and on pets to control fleas. Some pet shampoos also contain pennyroyal mint, which has the same properties.

Watch this You Tube clip to find out how to make a simple spray.

Make a Bibliography

Some subjects require you to produce a bibliography listing all resources you have used to complete your assessment task.

There are many sites you can use to help you compile your bibliography that can save you hours of work. A simple cut and paste is turned into a properly formatted citation in seconds.

Here are some websites that do this job.
